HOPE & The University of Michigan

The University of Michigan public campus ministry can be credited for many things in modern history: the birthplace of GYC, the birthplace of the first public campus ministries department in the division, and the birthplace of Campus HOPE.  But you may owe University of Michigan public campus ministry a huge thanks for your morning routine every day.  It was while John Harvey Kellogg was attending school in Ann Arbor that he thought of creating quick and healthy breakfast foods.

Michigan campus ministry is even responsible for the creation of two words: GRANOLA & SANITARIUM — words that were not found in the dictionary when Dr. Kellogg made them up.  The impact?  Kellogg became a physician and had a global impact.  At the start of his medical career, he invited his brother Will to join him.  Now, when you walk down the streets of Ann Arbor, you’ll notice signs pointing you to the Kellogg Eye Center — a tribute to W. K. Kellogg, a Seventh-day Adventist.

Adventist students at U of M are not interested in getting medical centers named after them.  Instead, they are asking, Who knows?  Who knows if they have been called to this place at this time for this purpose: to do a work that must be, and will be done by those who are led and taught of God.  On their opening Sabbath service, James Ervin, a convert to Adventism and graduate of the Missionary Training Program preached this very message.

As 115,109 people — the largest crowd ever to gather for a college football game in history — crowded around ESPN hosts to watch pre-game shows for the first evening football game of the season between Michigan and Notre Dame, Seventh-day Adventist young people met together to consecrate themselves for the task before them in the year ahead.  After the message, students joined the Ann Arbor Church for

potluck and then met with CAMPUS for a strategy meeting.  Our entire CAMPUS staff met with the student leaders to show our support and appreciation for what the students continue to do in reaching one of the toughest places to minister in North America.

The vision that the students walked away with is simple, yet powerful: to lead the way in public campus ministry and evangelism.  Fifteen years ago they led the way by starting a church group on campus.  Again, they seek new levels of commitment and sacrifice as we engage in the next phase of ministry to an entirely new generation.  Michigan, our prayers and support are with you.  Aim high and don’t forget your rich history!
