On Wednesday August 10th we held our first annual Faith and Outreach Camp for University-bound Students (FOCUS). FOCUS is designed to empower college-ready students to be strong Adventist Christians on their universities.
In order to achieve this goal the four-day camp had “What’s different about Adventism?” sessions, which covered some of the fundamental beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist church; such as the Sabbath and the Spirit of Prophecy among others. These sessions were chosen in view of the challenges that a college student may face on their university, while seeking to follow Christ.
Additionally, we had seminars that covered practical aspects of succeeding in college life. Among the topics shared were: time management, how to have a powerful devotional life, and relationships. These seminar topics contain vital principles that equip our students to thrive in a collegiate environment.
One of the biggest blessings that FOCUS provides is Christ-centered community and mentorship. The students who came to FOCUS were able to meet other like-minded young adults, and though small in number, there was still the development of authentic community. The four-day program is not the end of FOCUS, but rather a beginning of friendships and mentorship that will sustain the spiritual, academic and social success of our students throughout their college experience.
